Helicopter Training

Alpine aviation's helicopter training school offers you an exciting opportunity. Our team of instructors are among the most experienced instructors in the country, and are dedicated to provide the highest level of training aids available in the country, including actual video footage of individual exercises and computer based pre-flight inspections. We also offer the same computer based training programme used by the S.A. Defence Force. The school is a fully approved Aviation Training Organization under Part 141 of the Civil Aviation Regulations 1997, and has an impeccable safety record for Helicopter Training.

Our flying instructors are qualified to teach students from ab initio flight instruction to PPL status and through to Commercial Pilot’s License, with type conversions on R44, B206 (Jetranger), EC120 (Eurocopter), B407’s.

"For Alpine trained pilots the sky really is the limit - and it's a mighty big sky"

The joys of helicopter training with Alpine Aviation
To become a helicopter pilot you need to:

  • Be over 17 years of age
  • Reasonably fit
  • Have a determination to 'see things through'
  • Be prepared to put in the effort required to master the challenge
How is helicopter training carried out?
  • Prospective pilots carry out basic training on the Robinson R22 Beta
  • For those who prefer a larger helicopter, and for more advanced training, we offer training on the Robinson R44, the Jet Ranger or the Bell 407
  • Alpine Helicopter Training offer the most advanced computerised training courses available
  • We also boast the only in-house training manual, written by our chief flying instructor. The manual is complemented by actual video footage of the most important exercises as well as the same computer based training aid used by the SADF
  • The training course is totally flexible to suit the needs of the individual and is done on a 'one on one' basis
  • Whether you wish to spend a few weeks gaining your PPL or achieve the objective by devoting a few hours a week to your training - the choice is yours. The course can be completed in as little as 6 weeks

When I've earned my wings.... then what?

Private Flying - well, that's when the fun really starts. Alpine Helicopter Training offer a 'hire and fly' on the Robinson R22 and R44 to qualified pilots and thereafter the sky is the limit. Some of the favourite destinations include short flights to Mount Grace and Casalinga for lunch, or longer flights to Sun City, Mabula, Madikwe and Welgevonden in the Waterberg, as well as Cayley Lodge and Cathedral Peak in the Drakensberg.

It's really left to your imagination to utilise the helicopter to suit your social and business needs. Although helicopters have traditionally been used for shorter flights as mentioned, some of our more adventurous PPLs have made longer flights down the Wild Coast and Eastern Cape to Plettenberg Bay and Knysna.
